The Emu Park Community Bushcare group has recently received an award from the Capricorn Pest Managment group for our work against weeds in the area. Accepting the award in the community group category is Cliff Bunn (centre). It was the on-going work of Cliff and other volunteer’s in the Cocoanut National Park that particularly impressed the CPMG group.

The Capricorn Pest Managemnet Group was formed in 1999 to establish a coordinate approach to weed and pest animal management in the Capricorn region. Major stakeholders are the Local Government authorities, Qld Gov agencies, Landcare, Industy and Primary producer groups.

Emu Park Community Bushcare became involved with the CPMG when they organised the 2009 Qld Week Symposium at Capricorn Resort July 2009. A local tour included the Cocoanut National park, dicussing rehabilitation work there and lunch at Bell Park where the Bringing back the beach scrub work was highlighted.

EPCBG were presented the award at a dinner on November 18, where Cliff Bunn spoke about the group’s work and on-going committment to weed management in the area.

Bushcare are working with the council at Tanby Point to improve the dune area along Marine Parade. Areas cleared for the new bike path have been mulched and tree planting will occur in 2011. The Northern end of dune area, will be slashed and grass regrowth poisoned. Revegetation will then occur in this area also.

The dune area along Marine Parade is heavily infested with a number of weed species and in dire need of assistance. It is hoped that the efforts of the Council along with Bushcare and the local community can go some way to begin the resurrection of this important natural zone and habitat.

Some weeds that will be targeted include grasses such as guinea grass and green panic, Japanese sliver leaf sunflower, lantana, dark nightshade and painted spurge.

Do you want to get more involved in 2012? Make new friends? Why not join a flexible and informal group that allows you to join activities when it suits you, get your hands dirty and help the environment?

Resolve to make a difference

Emu Park is a great place to live. The relaxed atmosphere and physical beauty of the place is special, and needs to be protected. An important part of protecting our way of life in Emu Park is protecting our natural assets, like our coastal bushland.

Emu Park Community Bushcare group is always looking for new members. Could you spare a day or so every month to help out with on-ground work that will make a big difference to our local environment? Typical activities include weeding, mulching and tidying areas of endangered scrub.

You’ll learn more about the significant plants and habitats right in your backyard. You’ll also meet other friendly local people with an interest in the outdoors and the environment. Activities are usually held on weekends, with a relaxed BBQ to finish.

You can choose to get more involved if you want – the group welcomes people who have skills in organising working bees, natural resource management, planning events, lobbying for environmental issues, promotion and fundraising. Or you can just show up when you can and help us pull some weeds – there’s no pressure.

Why not email us and join the mailing list to learn more about what’s happening?
