2 Planting days in April along the bike path on Marine Parade at Tanby Point Emu Park have got off to a great start with good rain to settle the seedings in. These areas, which were badly disturbed when the path was created, will be the focus of many activities in 2012 and are part of long term plans for the area. We will be looking to spread from pockets of good vegetation out into the weedy area that make up a bulk of the dune area along Marine Parade. This project is part of a long term strategy to link and extend areas of rare remnant bush scrub along the Fisherman’s beach foreshore and aligns with the groups work in beach scrub further down near Lions Park. Predominant weeds in the area are Guinea grass and Green Panic, along with Lantana, Sunflowers, Painted spurge, Seratro and other miscellaneous invaders.

Plantings aim to suppress weed prevalence by replacing them with native vegetation that will shade out and eventually out-compete most of the weeds. These include plants such as the Cottonwood tree, Goats foot creeper, various local small tree species such as Tuckeroo and Sandpaper fig and native grasses such as Love Grass.

In this work we would like to acknowledge the support of RRC, FBA and FRCC.

Please contact us for more information, or if you’d like to participate in this project.

The Emu Park Community Bushcare group has recently received an award from the Capricorn Pest Managment group for our work against weeds in the area. Accepting the award in the community group category is Cliff Bunn (centre). It was the on-going work of Cliff and other volunteer’s in the Cocoanut National Park that particularly impressed the CPMG group.

Emu Park Community Bushcare became involved with the CPMG when they organised the 2009 Qld Week Symposium at Capricorn Resort July 2009. A local tour included the Cocoanut National park, dicussing rehabilitation work there and lunch at Bell Park where the Bringing back the beach scrub work was highlighted.

EPCBG were presented the award at a dinner on November 18, where Cliff Bunn spoke about the group’s work and on-going committment to weed management in the area.

Bushcare are working with the council at Tanby Point to improve the dune area along Marine Parade. Areas cleared for the new bike path have been mulched and tree planting will occur in 2011. The Northern end of dune area, will be slashed and grass regrowth poisoned. Revegetation will then occur in this area also.

The dune area along Marine Parade is heavily infested with a number of weed species and in dire need of assistance. It is hoped that the efforts of the Council along with Bushcare and the local community can go some way to begin the resurrection of this important natural zone and habitat.

Some weeds that will be targeted include grasses such as guinea grass and green panic, Japanese sliver leaf sunflower, lantana, dark nightshade and painted spurge.
